Q

How to do a flame test?

A

1) Clean nichrome wire by dipping it in HCl then holding it in a Bunsen - repeat 2/3 times
2) dip nichrome wire into small amount of substance testing
3) place the wire back in the flame again, colour is most visible if the solid is in contact with the hottest part of the flame
4) record colour of flame

17
Q

Testing for anions

A

Add the solution, then add nitric acid, if it fizzes it’s a carbonate

18
Q

If it’s not a carbonate?

A

Add silver nitrate to same test tube

19
Q

Chloride present

A

White precipitate

20
Q

Bromide present

A

Cream precipitate

21
Q

Iodide present

A

Yellow precipitate

22
Q

Sulphate test?

A

Add the solution to HCl and barium chloride to form a white precipitate - barium sulphate

23
Q

How to test for water?

A

Add anhydrous copper sulphate (white), if it turns blue water is present

24
Q

How to test for purity of water?

A

Boil it at exactly 100 degrees

Impure water would boil over a range of temps higher than 100
