Test for Chloride Ions
Add HNO3 and AgNO3.
Positive Result: White precipitate that dissolves in dilute NH3
Test for Bromide Ions
Add HNO3 and AgNO3.
Positive Result: Cream precipitate which dissolves in conc. NH3
Test for Iodide Ions
Add HNO3 and AgNO3.
Positive Result: Yellow precipitate that does not dissolve in NH3
Test for NH4+ Ions
Add NaOH and gently heat in a test tube. Test to see if ammonia gas is given off using damp red litmus paper.
Test for CO32- or HCO3- Ions
Add dilute HCl and check for fizzing. Run the gas through limewater and the positive result is it turning cloudy
Test for SO42- Ions
Add BaCl2.
Positive Result: White precipitate

Add PCl5.
Positive Result: Steamy fumes (HCl) given off.
Add Sodium.
Positive Result: Fizzing.
Add carboxylic acid with conc. H2SO4
Positive Result: Sweet smell.
Test for Alkenes or Phenol
Add bromine water.
Positive Result: Orange to Colourless
Test for Halogenoalkanes
Add ethanol, then aqueous NaOH, then do the test for halide ions
Test for Carbonyls
Add 2,4-DNPH.
Positive Result: Orange precipitate forms

Add acidified KMnO4 and reflux
Positive Result: Purple to colourless
Test for Ethanal or Methyl Ketones
Heat with I2 in the presence of an alkali (NaOH)
Positive Result: Yellow Precipitate (CH3I) and Antiseptic Smell
Tests for Carboxylic Acids (4)
Turns blue litmus paper red.
Add a carbonate.
Positive Result: Fizzing. Limewater turns cloudy.
Add PCl5.
Positive Result: Steamy fumes (HCl) given off
Alcohol with conc. H2SO4
Positive Result: Sweet smell.
Test for Benzene
Burns with a sooty flame.
Does not react with bromine water at room temperature
Tests for 1° and 2° Alcohols (2)
Add acidified K2Cr2O7 and reflux
