chemical tests Flashcards
flame tests
lithium with a red flame sodium burns with a yellow flame potassium burns lilac flame calcium orange-red flame copper blue-green flame
precipitates wiht NaOH
copper(II) blue
iron(II) green
iron(III)brown
check for ammonia gas
it will turn damp red litmus paper blue
ammonium when reacted with NaOH will give off ammonia gas and therefore you can test for it.
test for carbonates
if you add hcl to a carbonate you CO2 will be given off and therefore this means that you can then test fro CO2 using limewater
test for sulfates
add dilute hcl and then barium chloride
if a white precipitate is given off this means that original compound was a a sulfate
testing for hallides
add nitric acid and silver nitrate
chloride ion gives a white precipitate
bromine ion gives a cream precipitate
an iodide ion gives a yellow precipitate.
test for chlorine
bleaches damp blue litmus paper white.
