acid alkali and titrations Flashcards
phenophalein
colourless is acidic
alkaline is pink
methyl orange
red is acidic
yellow alkaline
litmus paper
red acidic
purple neutral
blue alkali
acid + metal oxide –> salt + water
–> salt + water
acid + ammonia
ammoniUM salt
note not ammonia salt
NH4NO3
titrations
add alkali with a pipette and pipette filler.
fill the biurette with acid
put indicator in the alkali
do a rough titration where you work a rough value
then doing it again but stop adding acid a few cm3 before
then add acid dropwise. When there is a colour change in hte indicator record value on biurette.
substances which are always soluble
sodium, potassium and ammonium
nitrates
substances which are always soluble
sodium, potassium and ammonium
nitrates
chlorides
sulfates
solubility
chlorides are soluble except silver and lead
sulfates except barium lead and calcium
carbonates hydroxides solubility
insoluble except for SPA
insoluble except fo sodium potassium and calcium
making insoluble sulfates
lead sulfate
add two dissolved soluble salts together react them in a test tube precipitate will be formed then filter out the preciptate out rinse
making a soluble salts
by reacting an acid that contains one of the ions and an insoluble base
heat up the acid
add the base in excess and then filter off
water and salt will be produced
evaporate of water to allow water to crystallise.
making copper sulfate crystals
Add copper oxide to sulfuric acid until in excess
filter off excess copper oxide
boil off some of the water to concentrate the solution
keep heating until a saturated solution is formed
test by dipping glass rod into it if crystals begin to form onto it
stop heating the reaction mixture and allow it to cool
remove crystals by filtration or by pouring it off
what makes soluble solute
acid + metal carbonate
acid + metal oxide/ hydroxide
sodium potassium and ammonium salts
you need to do a titration firstly
as they are soluble
