Chemical Structures Flashcards

1
Q

Giant covalent structure

A

Covalent: electrostatic attraction between the shared pair of electrons and the positive nuclei of the atoms

Doesn’t conduct except for graphite as it has delocalised electrons in between its layers

Insoluble in water as the bonds are too strong

Q

Giant metallic lattice

A

Metallic: bonding of free moving delocalised electrons and the positive metal ions.

In all states conducts electricity as electrons are free to move so can carry charge

Not soluble as metallic bonds are too strong

Q

Simple molecular structure

A

Covalent bonds between atoms to make molecules, hydrogen, induced and permanent dipole attractions between molecules

Intermolecular forces

Don’t conduct electricity

Some are soluble like ammonia.

Q

Giant ionic lattice

A

Ionic bonds: electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.

Conduct only when molten or dissolved in a solution not as a solid as electrons are fixed

Soluble in water- ions and water form ion- dipole attractions
