Chemical Reactions and lime stone Flashcards
Covalent Bonding
When two non-metals bond, Outermost electrons are shared . A pair of shared electrons forms a bond.
Ionic Bonding
Metal and non-metal react. Metals form positive ions, Non-metals form negative ions. Opposite charges attract. Metals LOSE electrons Non Metals GAIN electrons.
What is an ion?
Ions are formed when elements lose or gain electrons, they are charged particles.
What is limestone made from?
Limestone is made mainly of Calcium Carbonate CaCO3. Formed from the remains of sea animals that lived millions of years ago.
How do you get limestone out of the ground?
Limestone is quarried (dug out of the ground)
What Is limestone used for?
It’s used for building materials and is used in the chemical industry and for cosmetics.
What is thermal decomposition?
Heating limestone- Breaking down of a chemical by heating.
Advantages of limes stone quarrying
Provide jobs
Lead to improved roads
Filled in to make fishing
When empty used as landfill sites
Disadvantages to limestone quarrying
Destroys habitats
Increased emissions
Noisy & Dusty
Busier roads
