Chemical Reactions and equations Flashcards
What is a chemical reaction?
A chemical reaction is a process which substances are converted into different substances by forming and breaking of chemical bonds.
What is a chemical Equation?
A symbolic representation of a chemical reaction .
What is an acid?
A substance that releases hydrogen ions when dissolved in water.
What is a base?
A substance that releases hydroxide ions when dissolved in water.
Give examples of acids
Hydrochloric acid- HCL
Sulphuric Acid- H2SO4
Nitric Acid- HNO3
Give examples of bases
Sodium Hydroxide- NaOH
Calcium Hydroxide- Ca(OH)2
Magnesium oxide- MgO
Ammonia- NH3
Examples of acids in everyday life

What are indicators? Give examples
Indicators are substances that change color in the presence of acids or bases.
Examples include litmus paper, bromothymol blue and ,methyl orange.
What does ph mean?
Potential of hydrogen
