Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Chemical Reactions
Atoms are rearranged to create a new substance. this is usually irreversible`
Physical Change
A Reversible change where no new substances are made
Combustion
A Chemical Reaction where a substance reacts quickly with oxygen, giving out light and heat
oxidisation
A chemical reaction where substances react with oxygen to form oxides
exothermic reaction
a reaction that gives out heat, causing the surroundings to become warmer
Endothermic reaction
A reaction that takes in heat, causing the surroundings to grow cooler.
Neutralisation
when an acid and base react together to make the pH of the solution closer to 7 (Neutral)
Thermal Decomposition
When a compound is broken down using heat alone
Displacement
When a metal takes place of a less reactive metal in a compound
Balanced Symbol Equation
In a balanced chemical equation, the amount of atoms on one side is equal to the atoms on the other side. The specific elements are also balanced.
Bases
Bases that dissolve in water are alkali
All Alkali are bases
Acid + Alkali —>
Salt + water
Acid + Metal Carbonate —>
Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
