Chemical Reactions Flashcards
When does a chemical reaction occur?
Whenever a chemical bonds are formed, re-arranged or broken, and when molecules are changed or converted
Metabolism
All biochemical reactions occuring in the body
What is a reactant (or substrates)?
Substances entering into a reaction
What are products or (Metabolities)?
Substances produced as a consequence of the reaction
Does there have to be the same number of atoms on either side of the equation?
Yes, like energy, matter cannot be created or destroyed so has to be same number on eithr side
1) Decomposition/Catabolic Reactions
Larger Molecules broken down into smaller ones
Ab > A + B
2) Hydrolysis (digestion) reactions
Decomposition reactions using water
e.g digestion of glycogen to glucose units
3) Synthesis/anabolic reactions
Smaller Molecules combine to form larger ones
e.g. A + B > AB
4) Exchange/displacement reactions
Parts of the reactants ‘change partners’
e.g AB + C > AC + B
Exothermic Reactions
Energy held in bonds of reactants is greater than energy of product
Is Exothermic Reactions in Catabolic reactions or Anabolic
Catabolic
Endothermic Reactions
Energy contained in the product is greater than energy or reactants
IS Endomthermic Reactions in Anabolic reactions
Yes, and synthesis reactions
Reversible reactions
Can go in either direction
What is oxidation?
Loss of electrons
