Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What are the 5 chemical reactions?
Combustion Thermal decomposition Oxidation Displacement Neutralisation
What is combustion?
Combustion is burning in oxygen e.g. burning of methane to form carbon dioxide and water
What is thermal decomposition?
Thermal decomposition is breaking down of a compound using heat e.g. calcium carbonate decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is the gain of oxygen e.g. magnesium gaining oxygen to form magnesium oxide
What is displacement?
Displacement reactions are ones in which the element will take the place of another e.g. magnesium displacing the copper from copper sulphate
What is neutralisation?
Neutralisation is a chemical reaction between an acid and alkali.
In a neutralisation reaction an acid reacts with an alkali.
Acid and alkalis neutralise each other e.g.
Acid + alkali —>salt + water
Which salts are formed in neutralisation?
Hydrochloric acid reacts to form chloride
Sulfuric acid reacts to form sulphate
Nitric acid reacts to form a nitrate
