Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Acids consist of what ions?
H+ ions.
Alkalis consist of what ions?
OH- ions.
What is the pH scale?
A scale of acidity / alkali. The lower the pH the more acidic it is and the higher it is, the more alkali it contains.
What does 7 mean on the pH scale?
That the substance is neutral and it’s probably water.
What colour does litmus paper turn when exposed to an an acid?
Red.
What colour does litmus paper turn when exposed to an an alkali?
Blue.
Phenolphthalein only turns pink when exposed to alkali, what colour is it when it’s not an alkali?
It’s colourless.
When an acid reacts with something, what does it produce?
A salt.
Finish this equation.
Acid + metal –> _____ + _____
Acid + metal –> salt + hydrogen
What is a base?
A substance that reacts with an acid to produce salt and neutralise the acid.
Finish this equation.
Acid + metal oxide –> _____ + _____
Finish this equation.
Acid + metal oxide –> salt + water
Finish this equation.
Acid + metal carbonate –> _____ + _____
Finish this equation.
Acid + carbonate –> salt + water + carbon dioxide
Whats the chemical test for carbon dioxide?
Put the gas into limewater. If the water turns cloudy, then it will contain carbon dioxide.
If a base is soluble in water, then what is it?
It will be an alkali.
How do we work out the pH of a substance from the amount of ions?
If the amount of ions increase or decrease by a factor of 10, then the pH will increase or decrease by 1.
