Chemical reactions Flashcards
What is a chemical reaction?
When 2 elements react together to make a new substance
What is a physical change?
When a substance changes state between solid liquid and gas
What is a reactant?
the starting substances before a chemical reaction
What is a product?
The resulting substances from a chemical reaction
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction where energy is taken in
What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction where energy is given out
What are the 4 energy transfers?
Mechanical, Heating, electrical and radiation
What are the 8 energy stores?
Kinetic, electrostatic, elastic potential, nuclear, gravitational potential, thermal, chemical and magnetic
How are acids important to our bodies?
They contain vitamin C which ensures you don’t get scurvy
What is an indicator?
a chemical substance that tells us if another substance is an acid or alkali
What colour will an acid turn on the universal indicator?
Red or orange
What colour will an alkali turn on the universal indicator?
Blue or purple
What is neutralisation?
the process of making an acid or alkaline chemically neutral
What is an element?
Something that is made up of 1 atom only
What is a compound?
Something that is made up of more than 1 type of atom joined together
Acid + Alkali ——> ?
Salt + Water
Metal + Acid —–> ?
Salt + Hydrogen
What 3 things do you need to make a fire?
Heat, oxygen and fuel
What is the purpose
