Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Chemical Reactions Definition:
How stuff changes;
the composition or state of matter changing
Phase state change definition
When the way something looks changes, when it is actually the same as how it was before.
( example: if you melt an ice cube, it is still water even if solid in ice form ! )
List of Natural Chemical Reactions:
Decomposition, precipitation, neutralization, composition, combustion, displacement
Decomposition Definition:
Breaking down into smaller molecules
Composition Definition:
2 or more molecules combining leading to creating something new
Combustion Definition:
EXPLOSION !! Producing only CO2 + H2O;
if not, then considered an impure combustion reaction !
Impure Combustion Reaction Definition:
Something produced in a reaction other than CO2 + H2O
Precipitation Definition:
2 things combined
Neutralization:
( very important !! )
Balancing Acid and Base
( example: H positive + OH = H20 )
in that example, the “H positive” was the acid and to neutralize it, the “OH” was the base !
Balance Definition/Importance:
In chemical reactions, if something goes wrong, it wouldn’t be safe to write down or ask someone to replicate the experiment, since they can cause unnecessary explosions or damage/fatal issues. Scientists have to be EXTREMELY cautious while using chemicals !
Making things equal
Physical Change Definition:
When the matter of something changes, but not the chemical form
( example: if you cut a tree into firewood, the wood is still wood, its just the size of the tree is reduced into fractions of the whole ! )
Chemical Change Definition:
When a reaction or new product is discovered.
DID YOU KNOW ?
Teflon is the most covalent bonded thing to exist ! It was invented in the 1930’s and it is used for cooking pans, covers on wires, and a lot of other things. It means that there is something so strong in the world that even acid can’t go through !
Avagadro’s Number
