Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Which polyatomic ions have charge -2?
Sulfate and Carbonate
Which polyatomic ions have charge of-3
Phosphate
Properties of acids
Are sour
Often react with metals to form H2
React with carbonates
Properties of bases
Are bitter
Slippery touch
Do not react with carbonates
What is the Ph scale?
Measuring of how acidic/basic a substance is.
Lower the number- more acidic
What do acids and bases form?
Salt + Hydrogen Gas
What do acid and metal reactions form?
Salt + hydrogen gas
What do acid and carbonate reactions form?
Salt+ carbon dioxide+ water
What is a precipitate
A substance deposited in solid form from a solution
What is a spectator ion?
ions that are present during the reaction but are unchanged by the reaction
What is the word equation for combustion?
Hydrocarbon fuel+ oxygen= carbon dioxide + water
eg. ethene + oxygen= carbon dioxide + water
C2H4 + 02 = 2Co2 + 2H2o
What is combustion?
The rapid reaction of a substance, usually a fuel with oxygen gas to protect heat
What are polyatomic ions?
Ions formed of a number of different atoms which are chemically bound together and act as a unit.
Eg. hydroxide: OH-
carbonate: CO32-
sulfate: SO42-
When does combustion occur?
When a fuel exothermically reacts with oxygen
Equation- Fuel + O2 → CO2 + H2O
Eg.
CH4(g) + 2 O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2 H2O(g)
