Chemical Path Flashcards
1
Q
What is the anion gap?
A
Difference between cations and anions
2
Q
What are the causes of respiratory acidosis?
A
- Pulmonary
- pneumothorax
- paralysis
- broncopneumonia
- multiple rib fractures - Central:
- overdose
3
Q
What are the cause of respiratory alkalosis?
A
- Pulmonary
- pulmonary embolism
- pulmonary edema
- lobar pneumonia - Central
- hepatic encephalopathy
- hysteria
4
Q
What are the causes of metabolic acidosis?
A
- High anion gap:
- ketoacidosis
- lactic acidosis
- poisoning (salicylate, alcohol) - Normal anion gap:
- diarrhea
- early renal failure
5
Q
What is the normal anion gap value?
A
7-17mmol
6
Q
What does a high anion gap mean?
A
It means that there are unmeasured anions like ketones, lactates, P04, S04
These are all acids that lead to metabolic acidosis
