CHEMICAL NOMENCLATURE Flashcards
Elemental Formula Swap and Drop
You swap the valence of each element and drop it as their valence
Molecular Formulas s_____
Sharing of Electrons
Empirical Formulas sm_____
smallest whole-number ratios.
Structural Formulas sh_____
Shows how the atoms in a molecule are bonded to one another
Line Structure
Carbons are at the edge of lines
Ions composed of two or more atoms
Polyatomic Ions or Radicals
Contain positively charged ions and negatively charged ions. Combinations of metals and non-metals
Ionic Compounds
Ionic compounds composed of two different kinds of atoms or elements
Binary Compounds
Composed of 3 or more elements combined in a definite proportion, where the combining
ions are usually polyatomic ions.
Polyatomic compounds
Have 2 valence numbers and can form 2 different ions
Bivalent elements
Have 3 or more valence numbers and can form more than 2 different ions
Multivalent Elements
Composed of an H ion and non-metal only. Do not contain an O2 atom in their chemical formula
Binary Acids
Composed of 3 elements and the 3rd element is an oxygen atom and a polyatomic ion as its negatively charged ion
Oxy-acids or Ternary Acids
