Chemical Formulas & Equations Flashcards
(8 cards)
How are chemical formulas used?
To identify substances and determine the atom numbers of each element in chemical formulas containing subscripts.
What happens to atoms of substances during a chemical reaction?
The atoms rearrange themselves to form new substances.
Reactants
The energy and atoms/molecules of the ORIGINAL SUBSTANCE.
Products
~Formed from reactants
~the energy, atoms, and molecules of the NEW SUBSTANCE
Subscripts
atom number of each element, to the right of the element symbol
Coefficient
~in front of a molecule’s chemical formula
~represents the molecule number in each reaction
Law of Conservation Mass
the total atom number of each element in a chemical equation is not changed during a chemical reaction
How do you know when a chemical equation is balanced?
when the reactants and products have the same number of each atom on each side in a chemical equation.
