Chemical formulae Flashcards
Common acids
•Hydrochloric acid -> HCl
•Sulphuric acid -> H2SO4
•Nitric acid -> HNO3
•Phosphoric acid -> H3PO4
•Ethanoic acid -> CH3COOH
Common bases
•Sodium hydroxide -> NaOH
•Potassium hydroxide -> KOH
•Calcium hydroxide -> Ca(OH)2
•Ammonia -> NH3
What is an acid?
A proton donor (H+) because hydrogen loses an electron to be an ion it become a singular proton
Acids release what?
H+ ions in an aqueous solution
What is a strong acid?
It completely dissociates into its ions in an aqueous solution - HCl. Releasing all its acidic hydrogen atoms
What is a weak acid?
It partially dissociates into its ions - CH3COOH. Only releases a small proportion of its available hydrogen atoms
Exception to the strong acids
Releases 1 of 2 hydrogen atoms
What is a base?
When a substance readily accepts H+ ions from an acid. A proton acceptor
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water and releases OH- ions in aqueous solutions. Examples: NaOH, KOH, NH4OH
What is a salt?
Produced when H+ ions of an acid is replaced by a metal ion or NH4
Common acids salts
•Hydrochloric acid - Chloride salt
•Sulphuric acid - Sulphate salt
•Nitric acid - Nitrate salt
•Phosphoric acid - Phosphate salt
•Ethanoic acid - Ethanoate salt
Reactions to make salts: Acid + Ammonia?
Acid + Ammonia -> Ammonia salt
Reactions to make salts: Acid + Metal oxide?
Acid + Metal Oxide -> Salt + Water
Reactions to make salts: Acid + Metal Hydroxide?
Acid + Metal Hydroxide -> Salt + Water
Reactions to make salts: Acid + Metal?
Acid + Metal -> Salt + Hydrogen
