Chemical equilibrium Flashcards
Define the equilibrium constant:
The equilibrium constant is an expression of the concentrations of the products over the concentrations of the reactants for a reaction that is in equilibrium.
Define dynamic equilibrium:
Dynamic equilibrium refers to a reversible reaction in which the forward and reverse reactions are taking place at the same rate, and hence the concentrations of the products and the reactants are constant.
Define a closed system:
A closed system is one in which mass is conserved inside the system, but energy can enter and leave the system freely.
Define an open system:
An open system is one in which both energy and matter can be exchanged between the system and its surroundings.
Define a reversible reaction:
A reversible reaction is one in which products can be converted back into reactants.
State Le Chatelier’s principle:
Le Chatelier’s principle states that when an external stress is applied to a system in dynamic chemical equilibrium, the equilibrium point will change in such a way as to counteract the stress.
Define yield:
Yield is a measure of the extent of a reaction, generally measured by comparing the amount of product gained against the amount of product possible.
