Chemical Equilibrium Flashcards
Rate
Measure of the speed of any change, which occurs within an interval of time.
Collison theory states:
- Particles must collide in order to react
2. Particles lacking necessary KE to reacct will bounce apart unchanged when they collide.
Activation Energy
The minimum energy that reactants need in order to react.
Activated Complex
An unstable arrangement of atoms which forms momentarily.
Diagram (Ed vs Ex) characteristic
En: P higher than R
Ex: R higher than P
Catalyst
Lowers activation energy
Factors that affect reaction rate (4)
- Temperature - always
- Concentration - usually
- Surface Area - more area exposed to react
- Catalyst - lowers AE
Conditions necessary for equilibrium
- Closed system
- Rate of for + rev reactions are the same
- Constant density, pressure, colour
- Dynamic state
When to know which is favoured (P or R)
Arrow side
Percentage yeild
P: greater than 50%, greater than one
R: less than 50%, less than one
Types of Equilibrium

- Solution
- Formation
Concentration/Temperature Change Shifts
Increased —> Opposite
Decreased –> Side of loss
Pressure Change Shifts
Increased –> LEAST number of gas moles
Decreased –> MOST number of gas moles
