Chemical Equilibrium Flashcards
A Reversible Reaction
Can go in either the forward or reverse directions
Chemical Equilibrium
A state of dynamic balance where the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction
Le Chataliers Principle
If a stress is applied to a system at equilibrium, the system adjusts to reduce the stress.
Change Concentration
Increase- shifts to opposite side
Decrease- Shifts to same side
Change Pressure
Increase- Shifts to side with the least amount of molecules
Decrease- shifts to the side with the most molecules
NOTE: Change in pressure only effects gaseous equilibrium reactions
NOTE: If molecules on both sides are equal, change in pressure has NO effect.
Change Temperature
Heat Up- will want to cool down so favours the endothermic direction
Cool down- will want to heat up so favours the exothermic direction
Change Catalyst
Catalyst will not change the position of equilibrium but will help reach equilibrium sooner
Ammonia is produced using
The Haber process
Catalyst - Iron catalyst
Sulphuric acid produced using
The contact process
Catalyst- vanadium pentoxide
Kc only effected by
temperature
