Chemical Equilibria Flashcards
When is dynamic equilibrium attained?
Dynamic equilibrium is attained where rate of forward reaction = rate of backward reaction. Not = 0.
What are the 2 types of equilibria and define them
Homogenous equilibria is when the reaction contains reactants and products of same physical states while Heterogenous equilibria is when the reaction contains reactants and products of different physical states.
Definition of dynamic equilibrium
Dynamic equilibrium refers to a reversible reaction where the forward and reverse reactions are continuing at the same rate.
Kc Units formula
(mol/dm^-3)^c-d-a-b (C and D being sum of moles of products and A and B being sum of moles of reactants)
Equilibrium constant formula, Kc
(Products)^no.moles/(Reactants)^no.moles. (
Significance of value of Kc, if large…. / if small….
If Kc is large (10^5), forward reaction is almost complete; equilibrium position lies to the right, where more products than reactants are present.
If Kc is small (10^-5), forward reaction does not proceed to a large extent;; equilibrium position lies on the left where more reactants are present compared to products.
State Le Chatelier’s Principle
Le Chatelier’s Principle states that when a system in equilibrium is disturbed, the system will shift the equilibrium position to counteract the change imposed to re-establish the equilibrium.
