Q

Plant adaptation in drought

A

Wilted leaves due to guard cells in stomata losing their turgidity- prevents further loss
Hirsute leaves trap moisture near to plant to slow transpiration
Early senescence- leaf loss

Q

Nitrogen cycle
From 78% N2

A

Bacteria consume and excrete Ammonia NH4

Then Nitrite NO2
Then Nitrate NO3

Which can be absorbed by roots and fungi strings into root system

Q

Why does Nitrogen leave the soil system?

A

If it converts back to N2
If the crop is harvested
If loose Nitrogen (not fixed within organisms and plants) is washed out of soil
If the conditions in the soil aren’t oxygen rich then different bacteria will consume them in anaerobic conditions and release them
back as N2

Q

How can we retain Nitrogen in the soil

A

By planting from the pea family (fabaceaea) crops like peas, beans and clover and mixing these into our planting plans and using as a green manure crop.
These have modules on their roots that are a habitat for nitrogen fixing bacteria.

Rely on plants and organisms rather than unsustainable nitrogen feeds which can be leached away causing river pollution (blue green algae)

Q

What is an F1 hybrid?

A

They are the seeds of the first plants of the parents that have been chosen for specific qualities.
More expensive, more production
Any offspring from these plants will have diluted inherited qualities as external pollinators dilute the gene pool.
