CHEMICAL EQUATIONS Flashcards
a written statement that uses symbols and formulas instead of words to describe the changes that occur in a chemical reaction
Chemical equation
substances that combine in the reaction
Reactants
are substances that are formed by the reaction
Products
found between reactants, means “reacts”
arrow right
separates each reactant and each product, it means “react with combines with”
+
placed after the formula of a product that is a gas
arrow up
placed after the formula of a product that is an insoluble solid
arrow down
indicates the physical state of the substance
Physical state
indicates the substance is a gas
(g)
indicates the substance is liquid
(l)
indicates the substance is solid
(s)
means the substance in in aqueous
(ag)
numbers placed in front of the formulas to balance the equation
Coefficients
words or symbols placed above or below the arrow to indicate conditions used to make the reaction occur
Conditions
triangle above arrow
Heat is added
triangle below arrow
Electrical energy is added
a substance that alters the speed of the reactions without being consumed in the reaction
Catalyst
steps in writing and balancing a chemical equation
- Write the correct formulas for the reactants and products
- Start with the more complex parts first
- Balance elements one at a time by placing the smallest possible whole number. H and O are the last to be balanced
- A balanced equation should have the same number of atoms of each elements on both sides of equation
- Polyatomic ions or radicals are balanced as a group
a reaction to form one product
Direct combination or Syntesis
one compound breaks down into 2 or more new substances
Decomposition or Analysis
reaction between an element and a compound wherein the element replaces another element in a compound
Replacement or Displacement
used to predict the products of replacement reactions
Electromotive or Activity series
two compounds react to form two new compounds, there is an interchange of ions or radicals
Double replacement or Metathesis
