Chemical compound Flashcards
Compound
A substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a specific ration or proportion.
Element
A pure substance that can not be broken down by into other substances by chemicals or physical means.
Organic compound
Most compounds that contain carbon.
Inorganic compound
Compound that don’t contain carbon
Carbohydrate
An energy rich organic compound, such as a sugar or starch that is made of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Lipid
An energy rich organic compound such as a fat, oil or wax that is made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Protein
Large organic molecule made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen. nitrogen, and sometimes.
Enzyme
- A type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing.
- A biological catalyst that lowers than the activation energy or reaction in cells
Nucleus
- In cells a large oval organelle that contains the cell’s genetic material in the for DNA and controls many of the cell’s activities.
- The central core of an atom which contains protons and neutrons.
- The solid inner core of comet.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid the genetic material that carry information about an organism and passed from parent to offspring.
