Chemical Changes Flashcards
A physical change happens when
No new substances are formed
Is there a change in chemical properties during a physical change?
No
Can physical changes usually be reversed?
Yes
What is a chemical change ?
A change in which new substances (in the form of elements and/or compounds) are formed
What are the 4 signs of chemical changes
- Release or gain of energy
- Changes in colour and odour
- Formation of gas or solid
- Not easily reversible
Physical change vs Chemical Change
- No new substances formed vs new substances formed (products)
- usually reversible vs usually irreversible
- No change in chemical properties vs products have different chemical properties than its constituents
- Constituents can be obtained easily via separation techniques vs cannot be obtained easily
What are the 5 types of chemical reactions
- Combustion
- Oxidation
- Thermal decomposition
- Electrolysis
- Neutralisation
Define combustion
It is a chemical reaction in which a substances reacts with oxygen to form one or more new substances and heat is given off
What is the word equation for combustion
Carbon + oxygen -> carbon dioxide
What is oxidation
When a substance gains oxygen
Give 2 examples of oxidation
Rusting of iron
Cellular respiration
What is thermal decomposition
A process in which one substance breaks down into 2/more simpler substances upon heating
What is electrolysis
It is a chemical reaction brought about by passing an electric current through and electrolyte
What is an electrolyte
It is a liquid which can conduct electricity due to the presence of ions
Name 2 functions of electrolysis
- Cause the decomposition of water to form oxygen and hydrogen
- Used to coat ab object with metal ( known as electroplating)
What is neutralisation
Chemical reaction when an acid is mixed with alkali
Name 5 characteristics of acids
- pH < 7
- turns damp blue litmus paper red
- Reacts with alkalis, reactive metals and carbonates
- Can conduct electricity
- Taste sour
Name 6 characteristics of alkalis
- pH > 7
- Turns damp red litmus paper blue
- Reacts with acids
- Can conduct electricity
- Bitter taste
- Soapy feel
