Chemical Calculations Flashcards
What is the rule of conservation of mass
The rule states that nothing is ever created or destroyed, but new substances can be created during a chemical reaction where all the atoms stay the same but are joined in different ways, but these atoms cant be created or destroyed
What does a word equation show
A word equation shows the reaction between elements and what the reaction creates, a word equation is made up of ingredients on the right or the elements which react, and on the left side shows the products that this reaction creates.
What is a catalyst
A catalyst can increase the rate of reaction without the catalyst its self being used up an example of a catalyst is iron used in the process of ammonia synthesis
Why must symbol equations be balanced
To give the correct ratios of reactents and products
What is a molecule
A group of two or more atoms held together by attractive forces known as chemical bonds e.g H2O which has 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom
How do you balance an equation
- Split the equation into an ingredient side and a reactant side,
- then count up how many atoms the elements have on both the reactant side and the ingredient side
- Identify which elements are similar and have the same amount of atoms
- Only add big numbers
- Make the number on each side of the equation the same
Always add state symbols to symbol equations
