Chemical Calculations Flashcards

1
Q

What is the rule of conservation of mass

A

The rule states that nothing is ever created or destroyed, but new substances can be created during a chemical reaction where all the atoms stay the same but are joined in different ways, but these atoms cant be created or destroyed

Q

What does a word equation show

A

A word equation shows the reaction between elements and what the reaction creates, a word equation is made up of ingredients on the right or the elements which react, and on the left side shows the products that this reaction creates.

Q

What is a catalyst

A

A catalyst can increase the rate of reaction without the catalyst its self being used up an example of a catalyst is iron used in the process of ammonia synthesis

Q

What is a molecule

A

A group of two or more atoms held together by attractive forces known as chemical bonds e.g H2O which has 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom

Q

How do you balance an equation

A
  1. Split the equation into an ingredient side and a reactant side,
  2. then count up how many atoms the elements have on both the reactant side and the ingredient side
  3. Identify which elements are similar and have the same amount of atoms
  4. Only add big numbers
  5. Make the number on each side of the equation the same
