Chemical Bonds Flashcards
What are valence electrons?
Elements use their electrons to either TRADE or SHARE them. However, not just any electrons, they only share their outermost electrons. These are called valence electrons.
Why do elements trade and/or share their electrons?
Elements are most stable when they have a FULL OCTET.
What are Ionic bonds?
when a positively charged ion forms a bond with a negatively charged ions and one atom transfers electrons to another.
What are Covalent bonds?
mutual sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms. These electrons are simultaneously attracted
How do you know if a bond is convalent?
If the difference in electronegativity is LOW (way <1), the bond will be covalent.
How do you know if a bond is covalent?
If the difference in electronegativity is LOW (way <1), the bond will be covalent.
When do ionic bonds happen?
Ionic Bonds happen when one of the elements is much stronger than the other and steals it from the other
When do covalent bonds happen?
Covalent Bonds happen when both of the elements have similar strength so they share the electrons
What is electronegativity?
measure of an atom’s ability to attract shared electrons to itself
