Balancing Chemical Equations Flashcards
Atoms are not destroyed or created during a chemical reaction.
There must be the same number of atoms on each side of the chemical equation.
What are coefficients in a chemical equation?
the relative amounts of each substance present. (the big numbers)
What are subscripts in a chemical equation?
Subscripts are numbers that come after a symbol and below. Subscripts tell you the number of atoms of that element. If an element does not have a subscript, then it is understood that the subscript is 1. (the small number)
To balance the chemical equation, you must add coefficients in front of the chemical formulas in the equation
You cannot add or subtract subscripts
What is the structure of a chemical equation?
- Reactants
- Arrow(chemical reaction
- product
What are reactants?
Elements or compounds which exist prior to a chemical reaction(written before the arrow in the equation)
What are products?
New substances that are created by the rearranging of atoms after a chemical reaction(written after the arrow in the equation)
How are new substances that are created by the rearranging of atoms after the chemical reaction(written after the arrow)?
By rearranging the atoms.
What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?
Atoms are single neutral particles. Molecules are neutral particles made of two or more atoms bonded together.
CO2 + CO2 =
2CO2
