Chemical bonds Flashcards
Ionic bond
occurs when an atom transfers electrons to another atom.
Covalent bond
When a non-metal bonds with another non-metal.And share electrons.
Quadruple bond
When four electrons are shared.
Triple bond
When six electrons are shared amongst atoms, or when three pairs of electrons are shared.
Metallic Bonds
Where metal atoms share valence electrons.
Ion
an atom or molecule with an electrical charge.
Why does atoms stick together in the covalent bond?
The atoms are attracted to one another because of the opposite charges.
Why do atoms stick together in an ionic bond?
Metals lose electrons, becoming a cation. This attracts to the non-metal.
Why do atoms stick together in a metallic bond?
The positive charge of an atom is attracted to the lose electrons.
