Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What happens when two or more elements react together?
A compound is formed
What bond is formed when a non metal and a metal react?
Ionic
What bond is formed when 2 non metals react?
Covalent
Which ion would have a positive charge?
Metal
Why is the shape of a giant ionic structure regular?
The ions pack neatly together
What forces act in all directions and hold ionic structures together?
electrostatic
Can ionic structures conduct electricity?
Only when dissolved (when electrons are free to move)
What would the overall charge of an ionic structure be?
Neutral as the opposite charges would cancel eachother out
What happens to the electrons when metals bond?
They delocalise
What is the lattice like structure of a metal bond?
A lattice of positive ions and a sea of delocalised electrons
How is a metals structure held together?
The attraction of the opposite forces
