Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Name the two types of bonding
Ionic and Covalent
What do elements do with each other and why?
Elements react with each other to achieve a full outer shell of electrons.
How is an ionic bond formed?
the losing and gaining of electrons
What are ions?
Ions are charged atoms
When do atoms become ions?
When they lose or gain electrons they become ions
What charges attract?
Opposite charges attract.
If sodium has one electron on it’s outer shell what does it need to do?
Why?
It needs to loose one electron to have a full outer shell
If chlorine has 7 electrons on it’s outer shell, what does it need to do and why?
Chlorine needs to gain an electron for a full outer shell
If sodium needs to lose an electron and chlorine needs to gain one what does sodium do?
Sodium gives an electron to chlorine.
If sodium gives an electron to chlorine what charge does sodium have and what charge does chlorine have? Then what happens?
Sodium now has a positive charge, chlorine has a negative charge and so they are attracted to each other and bond.
How is a covalent bond formed? give an example
A covalent bond is formed by the sharing of electrons. eg H2
If two hydrogen atoms (one electron on outer shell)
meet what do they do and why?
Both Hydrogen atoms want to gain one electron to achieve a full outer shell so they share their electrons.
Name two things formed by a covalent bond.
Methane CH4 and Water H2O
How are compounds formed?
By the bonding of two or more different elements
Compounds formed by ionic and covalent bonding have different ________.
properties
