Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Compound
Substance that is made up of two or more different elements combined together chemically
Chemical bonds
When elements combine to form compounds, there must be some attractive force that holds the atoms together
Octet rule
When bonding occurs, atoms tend to reach an electron arrangement with eight electrons in the outermost energy level
Noble gases reactivity
Very unreactive - inert gases
Consist of single atoms
Do not react as they have a stable electron configuration (8electrins on the outermost shell except helium with2 )
Octet rule exceptions
Transition metals - many of their compounds can have more or less than 8 electrons in the outermost shell
Elements near helium in periodic table - tend to achieve 2 electrons in outer shell except
