Chemical Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Define molecules.
A
Molecules are a group of atoms which is found to exist together as one species having characteristic properties.
2
Q
Define chemical bonds.
A
Chemical bond is an attractive force that holds various constituents (atoms, ions etc) together in different chemical species.
3
Q
How did various theories of valence and chemical bonds evolve?
A
Through understanding the structure of atom, electronic configuration and the periodic table.
4
Q
Why should elements have electronic bonds?
A
It is the nature’s way of lowering the energy of the system to attain stability.
5
Q
How do atoms achieve a stable octet?
A
They achieve stable octet through chemical bonds.
6
Q
List Kössel’s findings.
A
- Highly electronegative halogens and electropositive alkali metals are seperated by noble gases.
- Formation of charged ions from a halogen and alkali metal is associated with gain and loss of electrons.
- Charged ions thus form stable noble gas configuration.
- Charged ions are stabilised by electrostatic attraction.
