Chemical bonding Flashcards
Noble gases
Elements that belong to the group 0
Has complete outer shell which makes them stable and unreactive
Why do atoms need to react
Most other elements are reactive and unstable because they do not have a complete outer shell
So they gain, lose and share electrons to attain the complete shell
Ionic bonding
An atom loses or gain electrons from another element to attain a noble gases configuration
Covalent bonding
An atom shares its electrons with another element to attain a noble gas configuration
An ion
Is formed when an atom loses or gain electrons
A metal atom
Loses its electrons to form a positive charge ion called cations
A non metal atom
Gains electrons to form a negative charge toon called anions
Properties of ionic bonding
- Giant crystal lattice structure
- Have strong electrostatic forces of attraction
So large amount of energy
is needed to overcome this forces of attraction
Properties of ionic bonding (2)
Have high melting points
Non volatile
Exists as solid in room temperature
2. Soluble in water but not in organic substances
Water molecules are attracted to ions, this attraction weaken the forces of attraction between ions
3. Conduct electricity in molten and aqueous state
The ions and electrons are mobile, so electric conductivity to take place
Properties of covalent bonding
- Low melting point
As it has weak intermolecular forces - Does not dissolve in water but dissolve in organic solvent
- Does not conduct electricity In all states
As all
