Chemical and Biological Agents Flashcards
What defines a Chemical agent?
Any chemical intended to kill, impair, or incapacitate man due to its physiological effects.
What are the physical states of matter?
Gas/vapor
Liquid
Solid
What is lethal?
Field concentration to kill.
What is toxic?
Poison ranging from harmful to lethal, dependent on the dose and resistance of the person.
What is persistent?
Long lasting / duration. Usually hours to days.
Thick oily and high contact hazard.
What is non-persistent?
Short duration. Usually minutes to less than 1hour.
High vapor hazard.
The 5 agents are:
Chocking Nerve Blood Blister Incapacitating
Function of choking agents
Cause sever damage to the lungs and tissue, “dry land drowning” : inflammation (Adema) in the lungs.
Function of nerve agents.
Bind to ACHE(acetylcholine estras) to cause severe muscle spasms followed by CNS (central nervous system) failure.
Function of blood agents
Block the production of atp.
Function of blister agents
Sever delayed burns to the eyes, skins and respiratory tract and severe ulcers on skin or in lungs
Function of incapacitating agents
Attacks neurological pathway. ( condition, temporary blindness) Goal: to dismantle supply line
