Chemical Analysis: Testing for Gases Flashcards

1
Q

How do we test for the gas Hydrogen?

A

We remove the bung and insert a burning splint into the test tube that might be containing hydrogen gas. If hydrogen is present then this will produce a pop sound.

Q

How do we test for the gas Carbon Dioxide?

A

To test for Carbon Dioxide we use limewater. Lime water is an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide. First, we draw some Carbon Dioxide gas into a plastic pipette, we then bubble the gas through the limewater in our second test tube. If we repeat this several times and the lime water turns cloudy, we know Carbon Dioxide is present.

Q

How do we test for the gas Chlorine?

A

To test for chlorine we insert damp litmus paper into our test tube that could be containing chlorine gas, if chlorine is present then the litmus paper will be bleached and turn white.
