Chemical analysis Flashcards
how do you test the purity of a substance?
the melting or boiling point of an object or the boiling point of an object. If it melts at the specific temperature for the element/substance it is pure.
what are formulations?
mixtures of substances to complete a desired task i.e. paint, cake
What are the two phases of chromatography and what do they entail?
A mobile phase - molecules can move. This is always with a liquid or a gas
A stationary phase - where the molecules can’t move . This can be a solid or a really dense liquid
what happens to a substance undergoing chromatography?
An equilibrium is formed between the two phases
how do you test for chlorine?
check if it turns damp litmus paper white
how do you test for oxygen?
put a glowing splint inside a test tube, if it re-ignites oxygen is present
how do you test for Carbon dioxide?
bubbling carbon dioxide through an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide, if the solution goes from colourless to cloudy, CO2 is present
how do you test for Hydrogen?
hold a lit splint over a test tube, if a popping sound is made hydrogen is present.
