What is the anode material in silver electroplating?
Silver rod (Ag)
What is the cathode in this experiment?
The jug being plated
Anode half-reaction in silver electroplating
Ag⁰(s) → Ag⁺(aq) + e⁻ (oxidation)
Cathode half-reaction in silver electroplating
Ag⁺(aq) + e⁻ → Ag⁰(s) (reduction)
Why does the anode mass decrease?
Silver dissolves into solution as Ag⁺ ions
Why does the cathode mass increase?
Ag⁺ ions deposit as solid silver
How does the solution concentration remain constant?
Ag⁺ deposited = Ag⁺ dissolved from anode
Purpose of AgNO₃ in solution?
Provides Ag⁺ ions for plating
Key observation during plating?
Jug becomes shiny silver-coated
Direction of electron flow
Battery (-) → Cathode (jug) → Solution → Anode (Ag rod) → Battery (+)
Industrial name for this process?
Electroplating/electrodeposition
