Chem Vocab Quiz on Aug 29, 2016 Flashcards
Electron
Negatively charged. Located in the electron cloud which takes up virtually the entire volume of the atom
Proton
Positively charged. Located in the nucleus. The number of protons identifies the element. If the number of protons changes, the element changes.
Neutron
Neutral charge. Located in the nucleus.
Ion
An atom that has a charge because it either lost or gained an atom.
Cation
An atom that is positively charged because it has more protons than electrons.
Anion
An atom that is negatively charged because it has more electrons than protons.
Atom
The smallest unit of any element. They consist of protons, neutrons, and electrons. (fill definition).
Nucleus
The center of the atom. It is positively charged. It makes up 98.9% of the atom’s mass. It is composed of protons and neutrons.
Isotope
Alternate forms of an element. They have the same number of protons BUT a different number of neutrons.
Atomic Number
The number of protons an atom or ion has
Mass Number
The sum of the protons and neutrons an atom has (whole number, rounded mass)
Polyatomic Ion
An ion made of different elements bound together. They can be positive or negative. (e.g., NH4^+, NO2^-1, PO4^-3.
Quark
All of the other particles located in the nucleus of an atom. Some types of quarks combine to form a proton. Other types combine to form a neutron.
