Chem Vocab Flashcards
Material
A substance that can be used to make objects
Element
A substance made up of atoms with the same atomic number
Compound
A pure substance made up of different types of atoms combined in a fixed ratio
Pure substance
Matter made up of all the same type of atom, molecules, or ionically bonded elements
Mixture
A material made up of two of more different chemical substances
Homogeneous
A gaseous, liquid or solid mixture that has the same proportions of its components
Heterogenous
A mixture where throughout the solution the composition is not uniform
Independent Variable
Conditions that are not the same for all groups in an experiment
Dependent Variable
Information derived from an experiment
Controlled Variables
Increases the reliability of an experiment
Experimental Group
A proposed explanation based on limited evidence; the starting point for an investigation
Control Group
Something that may change during an experiment
Experimental Error
Accounts for why results can only support a hypothesis and not prove it ; human, random and systematic
Hypothesis
The factor being investigated: this factor is deliberately changed, also known as the ‘manipulated variable”
Uncontrolled Variables
The factor that changes in changes in response to the independent variable, also known as the ‘responding variable’
Variable
The factors that are kept the same for all tests and groups within the experiment
Data
This group is being observed to see the effects of changing the independent variable
Repetition
This group is used for comparison. It gives a base line or normal reading when no variable
Physical Property
Any property of a physical system that is measurable
Chemical Property
A specific characteristic of a substance like an element or a compound
