Chem Test #1 Flashcards
When adding or subtracting…
Round the answer to the LEAST number of decimal places
When multiplying or dividing…
Round the answer to the LEAST number of significant places
Sig fig rules
- all non zero digits in a measurement are significant
- leading zeros are not significant
- trailing zeroes after the decimal and preceded by a non zero digit are significant
- Assume trailing zeros before the decimal are not significant
Chemistry
The COMPOSITION, PROPERTIES, and REACTIONS of matter, using MICROscopic and MACROscopic perspectives
Composition
Something created by arranging several things to form a unified whole
Properties
Physical
Chemical
Physical properties
Characteristics of a substance that can be found without altering the chemical composition
Eg.) mass, volume, density
Chemical properties
Characteristics of a substance that determines how it will react with other substances
Eg.) flash point, whether it’s an acid base or salt
Reactions
Change that takes place when 2 or more substances interact to form new substances with new properties
MACROscopic perspective
Perspective that examines the situation as it is observed in real life
MICROscopic perspective
Perspective that examines the situation from the atomic level
3 main branches of chemistry:
- Physical
- Inorganic
- Organic
Physical chemistry
Study of the physical basis of chemical systems and processes
Inorganic chemistry
Study of inorganic compounds, specifically their structure, catalysis, and mechanism of action
Organic chemistry
Study of the chemistry of carbon compounds with a few exceptions like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide
Scientific method
- Question ( based on curiosity, observations, problems)
- Hypothesis (research, prior knowledge)
- Design experiment (input/output variable, control variable)
- Experiment (multiple trials, varying the input variable)
- Observations (qualitative, quantitive)
- Analysis (find the pattern)
- Conclusion (reflect, what was learned?)
Why is creativity important in the scientific process?
Creativity is important in the question/problem stage, hypothesis stage, pattern finding and conclusion stage
2 main types of observations
- Qualitative
- Quantitive
Qualitative observations
Involve observations that are NOT quantified such as….
Sight
Smell
Feel
Sound
Quantitive observations
Observations that ARE quantified, and measured, such as…
Height
Volume
Mass
7 fundamental measure able quantities
- mass
- length
- time
- temperature
- electric current
- amount of substances
- luminous intensity
Derived units
Units formed by the combination of one or more fundamental units
Eg.) volume- cm3
Density- g/mL
Force- kgms-2
Capacity units
Units of volume used to measure FLUIDS such as gasses or liquids
Cubic units
Units of volume used to measure solids
Eg.) cm3, dm3, m3
