Chem - Metals Flashcards
Where are metals found?
In the Earth’s crust.
What are the properties of aluminium?
Strong
Low density
Good conductor of heat and electricity
Resistant to corrosion
What are the properties of copper?
Very good conductor of heat and electricity
Malleable
Ductile
Attractive colour and lustre
What are the properties of titanium?
Hard Strong Low density Resistant to corrosion High melting point
Metals above carbon are extracted by what?
Electrolysis
Metals below carbon are extracted by what?
Blast furnace
Metals below hydrogen are extracted by what?
They don’t need to be extracted because they are so unreactive you’ll find them on their own, not in a metal oxide.
What is a displacement reaction?
In a displacement reaction a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from it’s salt.
What is reduction in terms of competition reactions?
Reduction is the loss of oxygen atoms.
What is oxidation in terms of competition reactions?
Oxidation is the gain of oxygen atoms.
What is the thermite reaction?
When the more reactive aluminium reacts with iron oxide, the iron that is displaced is molten because so much heat is produced.
What is the thermite reaction used for?
To fill cracks in railway tracks.
BLAST FURNACE:
Use of: iron ore
Provides a source of IRON
BLAST FURNACE:
Use of: coke
Provides HEAT when it combusts and a source of CARBON MONOXIDE to reduce the iron ore.
BLAST FURNACE:
Use of: hot air
Provides OXYGEN for combustion (hot to keep the temperature high)
BLAST FURNACE:
Use of: limestone
REMOVES IMPURITIES from the iron ore.
BLAST FURNACE:
Product of: iron
Used for buildings, cars, etc.
BLAST FURNACE:
Product of: molten slag
For road building.
BLAST FURNACE:
Product of: waste gas
Mainly CO2, which is used to heat up the air going in, but it is a greenhouse gas!!
What is electrolysis used for?
Electrolysis means to break bonds using electricity. It is used to extract metals that are more reactive than carbon.
Why must the compounds be dissolved or molten?
So that the ions can move.
The solution of ion is called what?
The electrolyte
What is the positive electrode?
Anode.
What is the negative electrode?
Cathode.
