Chem - Basics Flashcards
What is reduction?
1) loss of oxygen atoms
2) gain of electrons
What is a compound?
A substance that contains more than one type of atom, chemically joined (bonded) together.
What is a molecule?
A word used to describe a group of atoms chemically (bonded) together.
What is an atom and what are they made up of?
a) The smallest particle of an element.
b) they are made up of protons (+), neutrons and electrons (-)
What is an ore?
A metal ore is a naturally occurring mineral that contains enough of the metal to make it worth extracting.
REACTIONS OF ACIDS:
metal + acid -> …?
Metal + acid -> salt + hydrogen gas
REACTIONS OF ACIDS:
metal oxide + acid -> …?
Metal oxide + acid -> salt + water
REACTIONS OF ACIDS:
metal hydroxide + acid -> …?
Metal hydroxide + acid -> salt + water
REACTIONS OF ACIDS:
metal carbonate + acid -> …?
Metal carbonate + acid -> salt + water + carbon dioxide gas
What is a mineral?
A mineral is any solid element or compound found naturally in the earths crust.
What are the electrodes in electrolysis?
ANODE - positive electrode
CATHODE - negative electrode
What is an element?
An element is a substance made from only one type of atom.
What is an ion?
Ions are electrically charged particles formed when atoms gain or lose elections.
What is oxidation?
1) gain of oxygen atoms
2) loss of electrons
