give an example of an Ionic Bonding
NaCL-anything really just has to balance
Describe what happens when LiCl forms
1) lithium transfers e- to Chlorine
2)they both becom ions Li+ and Cl- respectivley
3)ES attraction pulls them together
4)LiCl is formed
List 3 properties of IONS
Hard, Brittle, Soluble in water, can’t conduct Elec unless a liquid, high melt boil points
why are Ions are hard and brittle
Because ES force= strong so hard to break but when layers are moved the opposite charges will line up and repel causing it to break easily and is therefore brittle
why ions soluble in water
because water is polar and its ES force is much stronger than most ions so it causes them to break apart and dissolve
why ions not conduct elec when not in water
Ionic bonding have no moving charges (ions) able to carry a charge as they are bound to a giant lattice structure until they are dissolved in water and are free to move
how are electrons moved bw the constituent parts of an ionic bond
they are transferred
