Chem Flashcards
1
Q
Why does the temperature remain constant at a point when Melting?
A
- thermal energy absorbed
- particles increase in KE to overcome the very strong forces of attraction of particles in solid state
- temp remains constant till all solid has melted
2
Q
Why does the temperature remain constant at a point when Freezing
A
- thermal energy is lost
- particles lose KE and are drawn closer to one another by the strong forces of attraction between each particle
- temp remains constant till all liquid has freezed
3
Q
Factors of Diffusion:
A
mass ( increase mass, decrease diffusion)
temp ( increase temp, increase diffusion)
4
Q
What is the structure of an ionic compound?
A
The structure is an alternating cation and anions to form a 3D structure called a giant ionic crystal lattice structure
5
Q
What are the properties of an ionic compound?
A
- not easily evaporated (not volatile)
- high melting and boiling point
- soluble in water but not in organic solvents
6
Q
Why can’t ionic compounds be easily evaporated?
A
Ionic compounds are held together by strong ionic bonds between oppositely charged ions.
