Chem Flashcards
What is organic chemistry
The study of compounds of carbon
Give 3 reasons for carbons ability to form a wide range of chemicals
It has 4 covalent bonds, carbon bonds are strong, carbon can bonds with itself, double or triple bonds or form large chain like structures and rings
What are hydrocarbons
Simplest organic compound container C and H atoms
What are 3 types of hydrocarbons
Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes
What is the simplest hydrocarbon
Methane
What are the different hydrocarbons based on the carbon bonding involved
Straight chained or cyclic
Whats saturated and unsaturated
Saturated - hydrocarbons with Single carbon bonds.
Unsaturated - with double or more bonds.
What is homologous series of hydrocarbons
When hydrocarbons are divide into families
The main 3 homologous series
Aliphatic - carbon chains
Alicyclic - carbon rings with attached carbon chains
Aromatic - cyclist hydrocarbons involving compounds based on benzene ring or related compounds
What r the 3 homologous series of aliphatic hydrocarbons
Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes
Explain alkanes, alkenes, alkynes
Alkenes - carbon chained or branches chained hydrocarbons, Single bonds, suffix ane, saturated, don’t decolourise br2
Alkanes- carbon chained or branches chained hydrocarbons, at least 1 double bond, suffix ene, unsaturated, decolourise Br2
Alkynes - carbon chained or branches chained hydrocarbons, at least 1 triple bond, suffix ye, unsaturated, decolourise Br2
Cycloalkanes and cycloalkenes
Cycloalkanes - similar to alkanes but isomeric
Cycloalkenes - same as above but with alkenes
Isomer meaning
Same amount of atoms of different elements but different structures
Alkyl halides
When in a hydrocarbon, a hydrogen atom is replqced by a halogen atom e.g. cl
