This flashcard deck was created using Flashcardlet's card creator
What are the three states of matter?
solid, liquid and gas
Define matter and list some examples.
Matter is defined as anything that occupies space and possesses mass. It can be thought of as the physical material that makes up the universe.
What is the difference between crystalline solid and an amorphous solid?
Crystalline: atoms arranged in repeating geometric patterns
Amorphous: atoms have no long-range order
What is a mixture?
Two or more pure substances combined in variable proportions.
What is a pure substance?
A substance composed of only one type of atom or molecule
What is the difference between a mixture and a compound?
Mixture: formed from two or more pure substances mixed together
Compound: two or more elements bonded together to form a new substance
What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical change?
Physical change: composition of the substance does not change, even if appearance changes
Chemical change: substance undergoes a change in its composition
What is the definition of energy?
Energy is defined as the capacity to do work.
Explain the difference between kinetic energy and potential energy?
Kinetic energy: energy of movement
Potential energy: energy associated with position or composition of a substance.
