Bush Vetoed a bill which aimed to set a timetable for the withdrawal of us troops in iraq in 2007. He argued this timetable would compromise the mission and flexibility of the military. instead he argued decisions for withdrawn should be based on the recommendation of military commanders on the ground.

signing statement- president signing a bill into a law. check on the legislative as it clarifies the application of the law
E.g Obamas 2009 signing statement on the omnibus spending bill- Obama highlighted his concerns of the implications of certain provisions of the bill- particularly that it could infringe on the executives authority in handling diplomatic relations

The vice president is allowed to vote in senate, giving them a tie breaking vote in the case of gridlock, typically swaying the senate in the presidents favour

e.g Kamala harris casted a tie breaking vote during the senate confirmation of nominee Xavier Bacerra as secretary of health and human services. senate split 50-50 and harris broke the tie, allowing the nomination

NFIB V SEBELIUS 2010 - Struck down the medicare provision of ACA which prevented the fed govt from withholding medicaid funding from states.

Shelby county v holder 2013- struck down provisions of the voting rights 4a and 5 act which prevented states with a history of racial discrimination from enacting electoral laws without the permission of the states.
