Checks and Balances Flashcards
What are balances?
They allow each branch of government to have some role in the actions and powers of the other branches. Judges, ambassadors, and cabinet members can only be appointed if the president nominates them and the senate approves them. The president can sign treaties but they only take effect if the senate approves them. Judicial branch’s powers are balanced against the legislative and executive branch’s . The president chooses judges and the senate approves them. Congress can impeach the president.
What are checks?
They allow one branch to block the actions of another branch. Congress has the power to pass laws but the president can check this power by vetoing a bill before it becomes a law and congress can check this power by overriding the veto by a two thirds majority vote in each house.
